Funeral Services for Carlos "Charlis" Serna
Updated November 19th
Family, Friends and Donors,
It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of Carlos’ passing. We are saddened to share this news as we had just begun the process of fundraising funds for his wish to move to Kansas. We were hopeful that these funds would be used towards this goal and that his health would improve. We will now focus our efforts and this campaign to help with the expenses for funeral services.
Carlos passed away after complications with his kidney disease. Carlos was admitted to the hospital on Monday, November 16th after experiencing shortness of breath and a slight fever. After his doctors conducted exams, COVID-19 was ruled out and discovered he had been accumulating water in his lungs. Carlos was being monitored due to his declining oxygen levels and low blood pressure. Unfortunately, Carlos did not respond to the various medical procedures and his health continued to decline and he passed away on the early morning of November 19.
Carlos was a true warrior in every sense of the word. He showed perseverance and fought for his life until the last minute. He was a loving family man and dearly loved his wife Lupita and four children Monica, Issac, Leonel, and Emiliano. Carlos wanted to get better to be able to see his children grow up.
We realize we are living through unprecedented times that will prevent us from physically being able to mourn together. For the safety of the family and everyone else, we are going to ask that you please let the family mourn in private. Once we are able to confirm details of the services and how they will be executed, we will be sure to communicate those details with you.
Your messages and prayers will be greatly appreciated.

Estimada Familia, Amigos y Donantes,
Familia Serna

Original Campaign.
Meet Carlos "Charlis" Serna a loving husband and father of four beautiful children.
Carlos has been battling a series of health complications for the past 4 years. Carlos was first diagnosed with kidney failure in 2017. This diagnosis meant that Carlos needed a kidney donor and transplant or undergo daily dialysis.
As some of you are aware, finding a matching donor can be a long and complicated process. Carlos decided early on that he would sign-up for the donor list in Orange County, California knowing well that it would take up to 10 years to be matched.
In April 2018, Carlos suffered another major set-back after being diagnosed with prostate cancer which also complicated his dialyses treatment. After undergoing 20 sessions of radiation we can report that Carlos' cancer is in remission.
In August 2020 Carlos suffered a series of strokes due to bacterial infection which also affected his heart and brain. Charlie had to go undergo and open heart surgery so that doctors could control his heart valve. Carlos suffered no permanent physical damage but did begin to lose his eye sight. Doctors have told him at this point that his sight may or may not improve. Patients who suffer strokes recover differently.
As you can imagine, these series of illnesses and set-backs have taken an emotional toll on him. Through all this, Carlos struggled to keep his full-time job with all the health issues he was experiencing fatigue due to the dialysis.
At this point, Carlos has decided he no longer wants to wait for a transplant in California and would prefer to relocate to a state with a shorter wait list that will increase his chances of being matched with a donor.
Our goal is to raise funds for Carlos and his family to relocate from Anaheim, CA to Wichita, KS where he will be able to enlist in a kidney transplant with a shorter wait list. We are grateful that Carlos' parents and sister will move with Carlos to provide emotional support.
The funds are being collected will go to the following:
- Moving Fees & Expenses (U-Hauls, Electrical/Water Set-up, etc)
- Airfare & Transportation for family from California to Kansas
- 3-6 months of rent while the family seeks employment
- Medical Expenses that are not covered under insurance
Carlos has been tremendously brave these last couple of years and has shown tremendous resilience. However, his battle with cancer, recent strokes and sudden vision loss has really taken a toll.
We'd love to show Carlos that he has a larger community at hand that supports him and that are praying for his recovery.
This campaign will be managed by Carlos' younger sister, Avelina Serna and cousin, Israel Serna.
