My father Carl Herbison was involved in a motorcycle accident on Saturday November 24th, 2018.

He is a Veteran, Father of 4 and Grandfather of 10.

The Accident:
On Saturday November 24th Carl, my wife Kelley and I were on a motorcycle ride headed toward Anthem Arizona to eat lunch and spend the day with an easy ride.

We turned left from Cave Creek road onto Deer Valley road approaching 22nd street. We didn't get up to speed as the 22nd street traffic light was red. The traffic light turned green before we got to the light so we increased speed to the speed limit. About 100 feet before the light, it suddenly turned red as a car approached from the subdivision to the right. Typically the light wouldn't have changed so fast as it detects traffic approaching, but it isn't capable of detecting motorcycles (from what we can tell anyway). Dad applied the brakes hard to stop quickly as the car to the right had already started into the intersection. The front tire on his bike locked up and slid out causing him to lose the control of the bike. The bike slid about 100 feet and past the while line of the intersection as Dad hit hard and barrel rolled about 75 feet.

My wife Kelley (Operating Room Nurse) assisting him at the scene

The scratch on the road is where the bike slid on its side. The shadow shows where he stopped rolling, which is about about 8 feet behind my bike (the blue one) and about 6 feet to the left of the scratch.

Injuries:

As a result of the accident, Dad broke his left knee cap (patella), tore his patellar tendon, broke his right arm just above his wrist and sustained a good bit of road rash on his arms, hands and legs. He was wearing a helmet, very thick leather jacket, and leather chaps.

Insurance or non-existing Insurance:
At the time of the accident, his employer did not provide health insurance. He makes too much money to be eligible for AHCCCS (Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System) but doesn't make enough to afford his own insurance.

Estimated Cost:
At the time of the post, we are not sure what the estimated costs are going to be. He has full coverage on the motorcycle but no health insurance. We expect the hospital bills to be in excess of $50,000.
