I’m Carla, a Perth student hoping to raise money for liver disease research by shaving my locks for charity next month. I was going to do a marathon but I'm a pretty average runner, so I thought I would shave my head instead!
My mum Diane was diagnosed with autoimmune liver disease 2 years ago. Unfortunately she did not catch it early enough, which resulted in scarring of the liver (cirrhosis.) This is a chronic illness with little-known cause and cure (though it can be stabilised with ongoing medication.)
At times, the disease has impacted her ability to work, socialise and lead a normal life. However mum is a trouper and has remained positive throughout. She never complains about her situation and is currently managing the disease the best she can (whilst working full-time and being an amazing mother and grandmother.)
My mum is my best friend and her attitude and generosity has inspired me to raise money for the Fremantle Hospital Medical Research Foundation. I chose this local organisation as it conducts research into autoimmune liver disease as well as other illnesses including cancer, Alzheimer's, heart disease and Crohn’s Disease.
The shave is happening Saturday the 14th of May at Clancy's Fish Pub Fremantle. It will kick off around 6.30pm.
Any donations are very much appreciated and all donations go to the Fremantle Hospital Medical Research Foundation. Thank you, I really appreciate your support :)
