Reason: Support a terminally ill woman in obtaining legal aid for a divorce to reclaim her life savings and help secure her daughter's future

Background: Meet Carla Van Roy, a hardworking and compassionate woman who has dedicated her life to helping others. Unfortunately, Carla's life took a devastating turn when she was diagnosed with terminal metastasized colorectal cancer. To make matters worse, her trusted spouse took advantage of her, causing her to lose her entire life savings, including her cherished mother's inheritance of over $150k. Now, Carla is determined to seek justice through a divorce and recover what she worked tirelessly to accumulate.

Hi, my name is Dawn Craft, a close friend of Carla for nearly three decades. Carla has always been an inspiration to me and countless others. She has worked multiple jobs, put herself through school receiving a bachelor’s degree at the age of 32 while dedicating over 22 years to Wisconsin Public Service. Then she decided to change her career and returned back to school to earn a master's degree in social work. Carla's genuine passion for making a positive impact in people's lives has always been unwavering. Anyone who knows Carla will testify to her character and ethics.

Tragically, just six months after receiving her master's degree in 2021, Carla experienced the sudden loss of her mother. Shortly thereafter, she received the devastating news of her terminal cancer diagnosis. Despite enduring various treatments, from surgeries to chemotherapy to holistic remedies, Carla's chances of ever being cancer-free are not possible. She has been told her life expectancy was 3 to 5 years. As she is almost nearing her 3rd year of this horrific situation, she has come to the realization of what matters most, and asks for nothing more than to reobtain what is rightfully hers.

If she does not start her divorce process now, she may not live to see it finalized. Starting the process immediately will secure some inheritance for her 21-year-old daughter. After losing both grandmothers and her father to pancreatic cancer this year, Carla's daughter has already faced unimaginable grief. Witnessing her mother's suffering, both health-wise and financially, only adds to her burdens.

Carla acknowledges her trusting nature and regrets having entrusted her savings and inheritance to her spouse, who promised to repay her and build a future together. It may seem foolish to some, but Carla was deeply in love and vulnerable during that period of her life.

Carla, my dearest friend, has always been a selfless soul. She would go to great lengths to help others, even strangers. Now, she finds herself betrayed and slandered beyond belief. No one with a conscience would take over $150,000 from a terminally ill person without fulfilling their promise or even acknowledging what was given. Unfortunately, Carla's wife did just that.

Despite all of this, Carla harbors no ill will towards her spouse. She simply wants to reclaim what is rightfully hers and believes that pursuing a divorce is the best path to present the facts in court. Carla has already filed for legal separation and has been in contact with an attorney that has assured Carla that her case is winnable, but it is also very complex, and is requiring legal fees of $9500.

While Carla remains proud and humble, her current physical, mental, and financial vulnerability deeply distresses her. We are now reaching out on her behalf, hoping that 95 of our amazing friends can contribute $100 each to reach our fundraising goal. Any amount, as well as prayers for healing and strength, will also mean the world to Carla.

Carla’s ultimate wish is for her life savings to benefit her only child, and find solace in knowing she did not give up and serve as an example to her daughter that resilience is crucial, even in the face of mistakes, embarrassment and misplaced trust.
