Carla Sanders has been through a traumatic, life-changing event. She went in for a quick procedure and ended up being in the hospital for weeks due to surgical error. Please help support Carla with your love, and if you can, a donation to help with the growing medical bills associated with it.

More details:
Carla went for an outpatient, laparoscopic procedure on Wednesday, October 24, 2018, to have a cyst removed from her left ovary. The typically 30-minute surgery took 3 hours due to complications with the size and location of the cyst. After surgery, she was in excruciating pain which the surgeons assured her was completely normal and would go away in a day or so but was due to the air pumped into her stomach during the procedure. She was admitted that night due to issues removing her catheter and her high pain level. The next day, she was still barely able to move because the pain was so bad but was told again that it was air or gas. Carla begged to stay one more night in the hospital due to the extreme pain but was discharged and sent home without any further investigation as to why the pain was abnormally high.

Around 3 AM Sunday, October 28, Carla felt an internal pop and shift of something near the surgical site in her abdomen. Her husband called an ambulance and she was transported back to Howard County General Hospital where they discovered that she had a perforated viscous (bowel). They prepped her for emergency surgery and the colo-rectal specialist explained that she wasn’t sure how bad it was but she would either be able to go in and stitch up the perforation and wash the site (as fecal matter had been leaking into Carla’s system since the 24th) or, worst-case scenario, part of the bowel would be removed and a colostomy created to allow for healing.

Carla woke up from surgery with staples up the middle of her stomach above her belly button,  a colostomy bag attached on her left side, and an open wound about 4-5 inches long under her belly button.

Carla remained in the hospital fighting infections from 28 October through 19 November. She was released to go home while still wearing a wound vacuum for the open wound and continuing IV antibiotics. She is still in a lot of pain but is slowly making progress. A home care nurse has to come change the dressing on the wound three times per week for at least the next 4-6 weeks until the wound is healed.

In approximately 6 months, Carla will have another major surgery to reattach her colon, which we hope will happen without complications!
