CARL JOSEPH GOODMAN
(January 8, 1932 – January 5, 2022)
Carl Goodman passed away peacefully three days shy of his 90th birthday and just over six years from his wife Beverly’s passing on Dec 8, 2015.
Carl was born in Brooklyn. He studied at Brooklyn College for his undergraduate degree while playing football as the fullback and middle linebacker for the Brooklyn College. He then attended New York University for his master’s degree where he met his wife. Carl lived with his family in Bayside, Queens for over 55 years.
“Mr. Goodman” started as a math teacher at the newly opened Cardozo High School in 1967 and then became its Assistant Principal in charge of Mathematics. His mission was to encourage problem solving in an anxiety free atmosphere and used his sense of humor to achieve that.
Under his guidance and tutelage, the school has been awarded over 100 Westinghouse Science semifinalists and finalists. During his tenure, the Mathematics Department ranked 3rd in the nation in the number of youngsters receiving Westinghouse awards. Carl was genuinely concerned about the development and happiness of his students and teachers and created an atmosphere in his math office as a home away from home. He was one of those few individuals who had the ability to effectively convey the complexities of mathematics in a simple understandable manner ... while he stimulated the imagination and enthusiasm of mathematics in the minds of his students.
To this day, his students continue to remember him as having significant influence in their careers. Carl was revered as a model teacher receiving the 1986 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics in Teaching.
The Family has created this GoFundme page to generate funds sufficient to establish in perpetuity a Scholarship in Carl Goodman’s name to honor him while providing Benjamin N. Cardozo High School (where he taught for over 30 years) college bound students interested in mathematics a scholarship to pursue their love for mathematics as he had.
