We are raising money for Children with Cancer UK, and every donation, no matter how big or small, will help support children and families facing childhood cancer. Thank you in advance for contributing to a cause that means so much to us.

A few years ago, my youngest son developed a lump behind his knee. After numerous tests, an appointment with an oncologist and an emergency scan, we thankfully discovered that it was a cyst caused by an injury.

Those few weeks were some of the most terrifying of my life. The word every parent dreads came up in conversations and in every possible scenario running through our minds. My wife and I were incredibly relieved to learn that it was something as harmless as a cyst, but we couldn’t stop thinking: “What if it hadn’t been?”

Along the way, we met parents who weren’t given the same reassuring outcome. Their children were facing the fight of their lives before they had even reached their teenage years. That has stayed with me ever since.

I’ve wanted to complete a charity skydive for many years, but I’ve never quite found the time. Now, the time has come!

When I first put myself forward, I asked my co-workers for their support. As you might expect from a group of truck drivers, this was met with plenty of ribbing and good natured banter in the work chat. How an intimate wax became part of the conversation, I’ll never know, but it worked in my favour. The person who suggested it was promptly nominated by our boss to join me on the skydive!

I’m not particularly confident with heights and have never even been on a plane. My co-worker Ben isn’t exactly thrilled about jumping out of one either. However, we are both family men, and we know how devastated we would be if cancer affected one of our children or grandchildren.

So, we’re going to put our nerves aside, climb aboard that plane and make the jump for the incredibly brave children facing the toughest battles and for the families standing beside them every step of the way.

Please support us if you can. Every donation and share will make a difference.

Children with Cancer UK (Registered Charity No. 298405) is a leading national children’s charity dedicated to the fight against childhood cancer. Its work helps fund research into the causes of childhood cancers and the development of better, kinder treatments, while supporting affected children and their families.
