Swaziland- Nursing Study Abroad

My name is Carissa DiBenedetto and I'm currently an Accelerated BSN student at Kennesaw State University. Since my younger brother, Kyle, was diagnosed at 3 months of age with Cystic Fibrosis, I've been fascinated by, and grateful to, the many doctors, nurses and hospitals who helped my brother and our family. He’s now 27 and had a lung transplant two years ago. Through all of this, many medical professionals left a lasting impression on me. I always thought to myself, "Could I be one of those nurses or doctors that offers comfort to a patient or family member facing a serious medical situation?"

Although I spent years working in another profession, I think that part of me has always known that I wasn't where I should be. I've always wanted to be able to help and give back to people in need the way my brother was helped and supported. This year, with the support of my husband, I left my job and decided to pursue my true passion of helping others. I decided that I CAN AND I WILL BE ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE!

Through my program at Kennesaw State, I have an incredible, unique opportunity to study in Swaziland in May 2016. I will be able to enhance my educational experience, broaden my knowledge of healthcare in another country, gain new perspectives, and deepen my appreciation for our healthcare system. I believe this opportunity will make me a better nurse.

Prior to leaving on the 17 day accredited program, I will participate in various pre-trip seminars and will receive travel information. While in Swaziland, I will live in Mbabane where I will work in a general hospital and community clinic (wellness center), observing and providing direct health care. I will also assist in developing and implementing a service-learning project that will benefit the local community.

While there, I will have opportunities to experience the culture and beauty of the country, which include a weekend safari and a day long boat trip on the St. Lucia Estuary which is rich with wildlife, including birds, hippopotamuses and crocodiles. The Estuary supports South Africa's largest breeding colony of white pelicans.

Two of Kennesaw State University's well-respected nursing professors will guide us through the program, for which I will receive full course credit. They have successfully run similar, previous programs. The funds I raise will cover tuition, airfare, housing, most meals and the brief excursions I described.

My goal is to raise the necessary funds by December 31st, 2015. Your support will allow me to make this trip. Thank you for your consideration in helping me enhance my Nursing education program with this amazing opportunity. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
