Caring for Gavin LoChiano

Hi, my name is Samantha Wheeler, aka Aunt Mantha (to all my nieces and nephews).  I am raising money to help with my nephew's medical bills and immediate needs of the family, like gas money and other expenses to care for him.  The funds will be utilized as soon as they are available.  Your support would mean the world to me and my family.

My nephew, Gavin LoChiano, was delivered 8 weeks early by emergency c-section, on 11/27/15 at 11:58 pm.  He weighed 3 lbs. 12 oz.  He is currently in the Neonatal ICU approximately 56 miles from home.  His parents travel daily to be with him, 110 miles round trip.  All of the unexpected expenses that come with this type of crisis situation require that we ask for help.  Please consider providing monetary support.

This is his story:
It was Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.  Jessie, hadn't been feeling much movement at all on that day.  She went to the ER in Warrensburg, Missouri to be monitored.  She was monitored for 4 hours with a strong heart beat, but he wasn't moving around much.  They tried IV fluids and food to get him moving, and it didn't really work much at all. They decided to keep her overnight when she said he's moving but not like normal.  The doctor-on-call came straight up around 10:30 pm because he fully stopped moving on the monitors.  This isn't where he was supposed to be born.  She and my brother, Sam, sat there for 40 minutes with the only doctor in the hospital that does ultra sounds.  Gavin had to score 8 out of 10 points on what the doctor was looking for. He only scored 2. The doctor was direct, but highly concerned.  She said, "I'm sorry but somethings wrong and we need to deliver you now." Looking at the monitor, she determined there was a blockage in his small intestines.

They were prepped for the c-section, and he was out in 18 minutes.  Sam and Jessie got to see him when he was born, and Sam got a few pictures.  They had to be seperated.  They brought Gavin in briefly at 3:15 am, then rushed him off to Children's Mercy.

Upon arrival, they monitored him and ran multiple test, but determined he needed surgery immediately because they couldn't figure out what was causing the blockage.  They cut an incision in his belly and pulled his small intestine out to see that it was twisted.  They weren't sure how long it had been like that,  but long enough to have to remove 17 cm of dead tissue.

Overall he's doing well and making good progress.  His major organs are functioning properly, but still a long way to go.  He will have a second surgery 8 weeks after the first to reconnect the intestines the way they are supposed to be in his body.

They are working on feeding him for the first time.  He is getting 1 cc of milk per hour through a continuous feeding tube in his nose.  Since his intestines are not connected inside his body, he has a colostomy bag, so the feeding process is more intense.

Every milestone is a miracle!  Jessie was told that it was good that she went to the ER when she did.  If she had waited just one more hour, Gavin wouldn't be with us, and it would be a very different conversation.  We are so thankful for his life, and would be more than grateful for your donation!
