Caring for Sharon

Donation protected
My name is Alyssa Copeland and I am raising money to help my mom Sharon Svoboda live.

Since September 2015, she has been getting sicker and sicker. For the next few months, a variety of tests and screenings were done, ruling out each potential theory one after the next. Then my mom collapsed in November, beginning the first of many trips to the hospital. At that point, her blood pressure was 201/110 and she had lost 30 lbs. Since then, her blood pressure has been difficult to control, stress levels were through the roof, and she often told me how she just didn't feel right.

On March 11th, 2016, Sharon received her CAT scan results: a tumor in her right adrenal gland.

What makes this more difficult for myself and my family is that this is not the first time we've had to hear a parent say that they have a tumor. On September 24th, 2010, my dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon/rectal cancer. He didn't make it to Thanksgiving.

But while the memories linger, we know that this is a different battle and can end much more happily.

Beginning next week, Sharonwill start making the 2-hour trips to Albany for treatment and care. Ultimately, she will need surgery to remove the tumor/gland. Then it'll be at least 2 months of medication and care before her second adrenal gland can make up the difference for hormones. If the tumor is in fact cancerous, chemo and radiation will be needed as well.

While we want all energy and strength going towards her fight, we also acknowledge that insurance will not cover everything, and it certainly won't help pay the bills while my siblings take off work to drive her to her appointments or to the hospital.

That is why we need all the help we can get. Along with helping to  cover Sharon's medical expenses, this fundraiser is also to help cover rent and utilities, groceries (very important since she is on a special diet), and other daily expenses. As well, this will also help make sure that 5-year-old Brooklynn, my mom's favorite (and only) granddaughter, can still have a happy summer and be ready for school in September.

It's bad enough that my mom is sick. But to be so far away from her at this time breaks my heart day after day. I'm limited in what I can do physically but thankfully I can provide for my mom in other ways, such as this fundraiser.

As Sharon goes through treatment, I will be sure to update on her health, her happiness, and how we are making it through day to day. As well, we will be sure to reach out to friends and family and share their stories on how important Sharon is and therefore why this fundraiser is so important.

Please, help us take care of our mom while she focuses on growing strong and healthy again.
