Hi everyone,
This is honestly one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to write. I’ve always been a private person — the kind who handles things quietly and hates the idea of burdening others with personal struggles. But today, I’m setting that aside, because my husband and I need help.
My name is Carol (O’Malley) Hartranft, though many of you know me as Shea (Shay). My husband Kevin and I have been through more in the last few years than we ever expected. Just 48 days after we got married in 2020, Kevin was told he’d need a kidney transplant. We jumped into action — made drastic diet and lifestyle changes, and did everything we could to stay ahead of it.
But sometimes, no matter how hard you fight, life throws more at you.
Yesterday, we found out Kevin now needs a triple heart bypass — and possibly a valve replacement too. As you can imagine, this was devastating news. And while we’re staying hopeful and focused on recovery, the truth is… we’re struggling.
I’ve lived with multiple sclerosis for 27 years and managed to lead a fulfilling life despite it. But between my health, Kevin’s condition, and the endless medical appointments and bills, we both had to stop working. We’ve held on as long as we could, but now, the financial weight is more than we can carry alone.
For anyone who’s been a caregiver, you know how consuming it can be. Right now, my full-time job is making sure Kevin gets through this. And that means I can’t work — at least not for the foreseeable future.
Asking for help is not easy. Honestly, it’s the last thing we ever wanted to do. But I’ve come to understand that sometimes, leaning on others is a part of healing too. So here I am, putting my “sh-ego” aside, and asking for your support.
GoFundMe makes you choose a goal amount — but honestly, anything helps. Even a kind word. Even a penny. However your heart leads you. Your support means more than I can say.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. For caring. For showing up, even from afar. Blessings come in all forms, and I’m thankful for each and every one of you — whether we’ve met or not.
With all our love and gratitude,
Carol (Shea) & Kevin Hartranft
