Caring for Cullen Hulan!
Donation protected
We are starting this Go Fund Me account to help out one of our friends and MAJOR CAVALIER BAND VOLUNTEERS Cullen Hulan. Cullen is at every band event and although he has no children in the band, he is always there pushing equipment and watching out for our band kids. We want to give back to him as he faces his new reality as an amputee. His number one goal is to be on two feet for the Fall 2020 marching season to help out again!
Let’s help him reach his goal! Here is Cullen’s story:
“This all started with a cut on my foot a couple of months ago that healed but I reinjured it on a ladder causing it to break open. I thought I was going to the hospital just to have it cleaned out then follow up with wound care specialists after.
After an hour in the ER, I was wheeled into emergency surgery for Necrotizing Myositis. Twelve hours later the infection was still present and increasing but thankfully had yet to invade my bloodstream. This extremely rare infection is better known as ‘wet gas gangrene’ and is fatal within 48 hours if not aggressively treated. There was no other option. In order to save my life, surgeons had to amputate my left leg below the knee. During my stay it was also discovered that I am diabetic….which really complicates my recovery. As a former dance instructor and gymnastics coach this is a completely new reality for me as an amputee and I am trying to make the best of it. One of my main goals is to be back “on my feet” with a prosthetic limb for band competitions this fall and participate as fully as I have in the past.
We do have health insurance but like most plans it covers only a percentage of the total leaving me to face around $25K in out of pocket hospital expenses plus paying for an upgraded prosthetic limb, 36” high wheelchair ramp into my home, special wheelchair with support for ‘Mr. Stumpie’ and more.”
