Caring For A Cure through Grizzly Ultra Marathon

Meet Kenny Mac and the boys. 1 year ago, in the middle of Covid, Ken finished his chemo treatments for testicular cancer at Mass General Hospital. The months of treatments were brutal for him and it took a long time once treatments were completed for him to start to feel better. After going through that trying experience Ken is getting back to focusing on his fitness and is setting goals to help get back to where he was physically pre-cancer – which was a champion Aussie Rules Football player and an Ultra Marathon runner. In October this year Ken is going to run the Grizzly Ultra Marathon, which is a 50k race through the Canadian Rocky Mountains – 1 year after chemo y’all! This is where the boys come in – in an effort to help keep Ken motivated to train for the race, and to keep going during the race, the boys are going to train for the race as well and run alongside him (probably far behind him). Luckily for the boys the race is a 5 leg relay

Ken’s wife Adrienne is running an Ironman and is using that platform to raise money for an organization that helped Ken and Adrienne get through the chemo process in the middle of Covid. So, we are going to take her lead and do the same thing. The organization is called Caring for a Cure. Caring For A Cure was founded by the nurses of the Mass General Adult Hematology/Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant program with a goal to improve the journey of patients and families with cancer through research, resources, and awareness.

Ken's team of nurses and doctors at MGH were nothing short of amazing, and they went the extra mile every single day- they hunted down anything Ken needed to make him more comfortable, answered Adrienne’s calls and messages at all hours of the night when Ken was sick, organized and provided Adrienne with free beautiful accommodation for a week when she could no longer go to the hospital with Ken due to Covid, and SO much more.

We are hopeful that by October we will be able to easily go to Canada, but if for any reason we aren't allowed to and we cannot race, all donations will still go to Caring For A Cure. We set the goal at $10,000 just as a general amount, but we know you can do better!

What is Caring for a Cure?

For Patients. For Families. For Research. For a Cure.

Caring For A Cure was founded in 2011 by the nurses of the Adult Hematology/Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant program at Mass General with a goal to improve the journey of patients and families with cancer through research, resources, and awareness. Since we began, we have raised over $1,000,000!

The funds raised have been directed to things both big and small – from flying in a bone marrow donor from halfway around the world, to sending caregivers out to dinner, to impromptu celebrations of anniversaries and birthdays unexpectedly spent in the hospital, to making sure new leukemia patients have real tissues.

Our Mission

Our goal to ease the journey and uplift the spirits of our patients and their families through support, connections and research.

For Patients - At the core of our mission is our patients. We continuously seek opportunities both small and large to make their journey easier and uplift spirits.

For Families - Families support our patients and are incredibly important to us. Recognizing that this is a journey for patients and those who walk beside them, we aim to support and recognize their integral role.

For Research - Research leads to innovations that help our patients recover faster and moves us toward a cure. We are incredibly lucky to be based at Mass General, surrounded by an incredible research team both here and across the river.

For a Cure - We'd love it if we could play even a small part in curing this disease. We'd happily move on to something else and fundraise for another worthy cause.
