Caridad and Luis Salazar memorial fund

Losing a parent is one of the hardest experiences any of us have to endure. Over the past month, Ileana and Flora Salazar have lost both of their parents.

Like half a million other Americans, COVID has claimed the lives of Luis Salazar and Caridad Salazar. Three days after Luis first felt symptoms, he was gone. He was in the process of recovering from surgery and the virus struck when his body was at its most vulnerable. Caridad, on the other hand, was the picture of good health. Not yet 65 and with no underlying conditions, she seemed poised to make a recovery. But as the last three weeks progressed, COVID attacked her lungs and her heart. Caridad was put on a ventilator with the hope that her lungs could rebuild in strength but not even the best technology was able to reverse the damage done to her body.

Both Luis and Caridad are now at peace and Ileana and Flora will try to carry on in their absence. Family group chats have now grown silent and an apartment lay empty, as the Salazar family was reduced in half in the span of 30 days. Family history, family recipes, family memories are now forever lost to time. Every future plan (Christmases, weddings, birth of children, etc) will now be made without them. Ileana and Flora could not have been closer to their mother, with whom they lived 15 minutes away from and spoke to every single day.

Throughout these two battles with the virus, there were three trips to the emergency room and two ICU stays that cumulatively lasted a month.

Any funds donated here will be distributed directly between Ileana and Flora Salazar, who are jointly managing the affairs of both of their parents. While achieving the goal set here will only begin to cover the costs of medical expenses, funeral expenses, lost wages and outstanding debt, this will be used as a springboard to easier manage the long-term financial burden of these devastating losses.

Every bit helps. We ask that you do not overextend yourself but we wouldn't make this page if the situation wasn't extraordinarily difficult.

If you would prefer to donate privately, feel free to contact myself, Ileana or Flora.

To those who have already contributed privately, you have our deepest gratitude.

Thank you for any support you can provide, whether it be financial, emotional or spiritual.

We remind you to please stay safe, as this virus is far from over. Please appreciate your loved ones while they are here with you on this earth.
