Hey guys!
For those of you who may not know me, I am a nurse at St. Anthony North Health Campus in Westminster, Colorado. I have worked at this hospital for the past two years. Over the past 6 months, I have gotten to know a young gentleman by the name of Mame. He works for the food services department at my hospital. He is 25 years old and is from Senegal (West Africa). He says this is the most beautiful land of the LIONS! Our friendship started one Saturday morning as I was getting my morning coffee at Peet's cafe, the coffee shop in my hospital. Yes, I had a cup of coffee when I was pregnant! It was Mame's first time working in the coffee shop. He was taking a while to make my caramel macchiato, and I struck up a conversation with him trying to pass the time and not make him feel bad for how long he was taking. He was just learning how to be a barista, of course he was slow! Since this day, I spoke with him each time I would see him. He always has the biggest smile on his face and is so excited to see me. My last day at work before having my sweet baby Rome, he came up to my unit to hug me and tell me good luck with having my baby. He always looks as though he loves life, while I am sometimes in a grumpy mood about having to be at work. (perspective) I am sure he appreciates being "seen" as some of the work he does is behind the scenes delivering food trays to patient's rooms or preparing food in the kitchen. Anyway, driving to work yesterday (November 28th), as I was listening to worship music, God was really pressing in on my heart in placing Mame on my heart. I felt I should ask for his contact information so my husband and I could become friends with him outside of me being at work. I called and asked my husband what he thought of this and he thought it would be great. I saw Mame on my unit later in the day and gave him a little piece of paper with my name and phone number on it and told him to feel free to contact me as my husband (who he had previously met) and I would love to hang out with him. This seemed to catch him off guard and he responded that he did not want me to feel obligated to be his friend. An hour or so later I received a text from him... "Mame." Through me asking him questions both at work and through texts, I got to know a little more about his situation. He moved to New Jersey from Senegal when he was 22. He is now 25 and moved to Denver in March 2015. He has one sister in NJ, but otherwise no family and few friends here in the U.S. He use to send money back home but does not have any extra cash to do so now. He lives in some apartments in a shopping center across the street from my hospital so that he can WALK to work because he DOES NOT HAVE A CAR. Yesterday, it was freezing. I was cold in my car driving to work while he was walking to work at 6 am. His rent for a studio is half of what he makes in a month. Guys, he works 6 days/60+ hours a week, 240+ hours a month only to make half of what his rent costs. I did the math and let's just say I should never complain about my job and how many long hours I work as a nurse again. (more perspective) He basically works every day of the week to make enough money to live here. He has never been up to the mountains, etc. Last night after work, I was watching the Broncos beat up on the Patriots with my husband and my pastor and his wife. I began telling them about Mame and how strongly God was impressing him upon my heart and how I had to do something to help him. I was saying how I wish I could radically bless him and buy him a car. My pastor, Matt, responded that we could get him a car. He had seen it done before. This made me really excited! Today, I looked at different cars on craigslist Denver. I made a list of individuals I believed would contribute to this and here I am now making this Go Fund Me page so anyone who feels led can easily contribute to BLESS MAME tremendously! We do not just want to hand him a car, as we know having a car costs money. We want to purchase the taxes, license plate, tags, etc. If we can help him with his insurance payments too, AMAZING! He also has gotten his permit to drive; however, a 2 hour class he wants to take to help him get his driver's license is $160 and he has not been able to afford to take this class. Aren't we all so blessed with this ability to drive that I know I take so for granted? Our GOAL is to get a car and all the needed attachments to go with a car by CHRISTMAS! "MERRY CHRISTMAS, MAME! We honor the hard work you have done and want to bless you!" Can't you see the love in doing this for an honest, hard-working young man? Oh, this excites my heart SO MUCH!!! Guys, search your hearts and give as much as you can! If we surpass our goal, that would be incredible too! We will give this guy a fighting chance at life in America! A dream for him. A given for most of us. Thank you guys! I love you all and am so thankful for people who have such giving hearts! Merry Christmas and God bless you all! :)
