Caregiver in Crisis: Help Me Recover from Years of Strain

Donation protected
Hi friends and kind strangers,

My name is Kim, and I’m reaching out during one of the most difficult times in my life. For the last three years, I’ve been the primary caregiver for my father, who passed away after a long battle with dementia and congestive heart failure. I gave up a lot during those years—time, energy, financial stability—and did it with pure love. I wouldn’t have chosen to be anywhere else. However, I’m now struggling to stay afloat.

While he was ill, my father let his life insurance lapse—he no longer understood its importance. He also unknowingly sold his prized Tiffany glass collection to an antique dealer who drastically underpaid him. We lost not only the value of those pieces but also a part of his legacy.

At the same time, I’ve been supporting my 34-year-old son, who lives with me, who is neurodivergent and has a severe mental health condition. He requires continuous care and support, and I do my best to provide it while also working remotely full-time.

On a cool note, my son is a member of the 501st Star Wars costuming community, portraying a Stormtrooper and Qui-Gon Jinn. He loves to participate in Make-A-Wish events, children’s hospital visits, and Hear Me Roar (an event held at local zoos to promote animal awareness and education). He also creates music and art. I’m incredibly proud of him!

I started a new job shortly after my father passed in late March, and I work very hard, but the toll of caregiving, trauma, and financial strain has caught up with me. I’m currently in the red by nearly $1,000 due to overdraft and late fees while trying to catch up on basic bills.

On top of that, Hurricane Helene caused some damage to my home + yard that I’m still trying to repair myself. I’ve been pushing through with severe anxiety, Fibromyalgia, and PTSD, and am currently in trauma counseling to help recover.

I’m asking for help to get through this rough patch—any amount will go directly to:
  • Overdraft and catch-up bills (~$1,000)
  • Emergency home repairs after the hurricane
  • Mental health care and breathing room to heal

Your kindness will help me stabilize and rebuild. Even if you can’t donate, please share my story. I’ve given my all for my family—now I’m hoping for a little help to take care of myself, my son, and our home.

With gratitude,
Kim
