Hello, my name is Scott and I have advanced metatastic cancer....multiple myeloma to be specific. Just over 3-1/2 years have passed since I received a phone call 45 minutes after having arrived home from a cat scan and heard the life shattering words, " extensive multiple metastases with yet unknown primary origin."
In a blink of an eye everything in my world, everything that I knew or thought I knew, suddenly came crashing down around me. With no warning, I was thrust into a bitter life and death struggle against a force that had a single focus...to kill me. While this struggle has been filled with endless treatments, hospitalizations, surgeries and radiation two things have dominated it....a slow but constant unrelenting physical decline and my son Matt's never ending caregiving, love and support.
What started as just a little help from Matt now and again has grown to a full time day long support. Nerve damage from destructive spinal tumors have destroyed much of my ability to control my right leg and arm so even the most simple tasks such as dressing myself or putting on my socks are beyond me and I am entirely dependent on Matt to get these things done. Most recently a minor stroke and myeloma complications deprived me of the functionality of my right eye. Rehab is helping but there will surely be an ongoing deficit meaning a need for even more effort on Matt's part.
So what does all of this have to do with a GoFundMe? Well it's simple really. After 3-1/2 years I am out of funds. The resources that I had set aside before I became ill have finally been completely absorbed by the catastrophic endless uncovered associated costs of fighting terminal cancer. I find myself unable to give Matt anything anymore....something that I started doing when he gave up his part time job to become my full time secondary caregiver along with my wife.
Matt, of course, has no expectations and does what he does purely out of his love for me. The idea for this GoFundMe is entirely mine and I've struggled for some time trying to decide if I should launch it.
All my life, I have been an independent & self sufficient person and now I can't even put on my own socks or give my son a few dollars a week for dozens of hours of effort. But what is worse and what finally tipped the balance for me is that my needs are preventing him from going out and earning money from any one of the millions of part-time jobs he could just walk into.
So this is really the driving force behind this. I'm asking you to help me...help him. Anything that you could spare, even just a few dollars would be greatly appreciated. To my friends that have asked me over the months and years what they can do for me....this would be it.
