Hi, my name is Heidi, and my brother Bobby Burge has been an ALS caregiver for a family friend, Andy, since 2018. Three days after Andy was diagnosed with ALS in 2017, his wife had a massive heart attack and died shortly thereafter. Andy and his two teenage children were left to face the daunting future alone. After hearing of this tragic story, Bobby moved home to his beloved New Orleans to accept the challenge of caring for this family that had been dealt such a devastating blow from life.
Over the years, Bobby has helped Andy and his family live with ALS in a way that is inspiring. Driving Andy long distances to attend the college graduation of his daughter, encouraging Andy's son to complete all the paperwork to get accepted into college, ensuring every holiday is meaningful, and even getting Andy out to party at Mardi Gras!
Many people view Bobby as a kind of "living saint" because he serves Andy 24 hours per day more than six days a week, with little freedom to live his own life or tend to his own personal needs. In fact, he has often neglected his own health needs because care for ALS patients is so difficult to come by. He not only cares for Andy as a job; Bobby loves Andy as a brother.
But now Bobby needs your love and support!
Rushed to the emergency room last night, Bobby was diagnosed with a very severe case of pneumonia and tachycardia. He was admitted for treatment and testing, and remains at the hospital today.
When being treated at the hospital, Bobby was surprised to learn that he had unintentionally let his health insurance lapse. As such, he has no coverage for the medical costs that are now accruing.
It is my hope that anyone who knows and/or values the dedication of quality caregivers will show Bobby that he is not alone in this situation. Whether you are moved by Bobby and Andy's story, or you wish to honor a caregiver in your life, please consider donating to help Bobby manage his mounting medical bills.
Even if you decide not to give, be sure to thank a caregiver for their amazing acts of service and dedication.
