Care for Bitaug

For many the Philippines is known as a paradise with warm hospitality and colourful celebration. Since traveling and living in a rural area in this beautiful country for the past few years, the challenges become clearer. It's far from paradise for many residents who call this land home.
For many Filipinos access to a hospital is limited. Rural health centres serve local needs, and are the main source of free primary health care, playing an important role in the lives of most citizens here. Unfortunately, many facilities are underserved and underfunded. My husband and I have chosen to create a home in a small village called Bitaug on Siargao Island. Sadly, we've learned that the health centre receives no budget from the Department of Health, therefore, many patients go without care and do not receive critical medication. IF transportation is an option, traveling to the closest hospital is longer than a 30 minute drive. Without funding, basic repairs to the building are impossible.
In collaboration with the community, local doctors and nurses, we are fundraising to raise funds for priority medications and to renovate the Bitaug health centre's treatment building, so that the residents can receive basic care and feel comfortable being treated in their own village.
Funds raised will specifically go towards:
- Repairing the health centre's roof and floor
- Painting the unfinished walls
- Purchasing 6 month's supply of the most needed medication and supplies
In addition to this GoFundMe, the barangay and I will be organizing an Ukay Ukay event (2nd hand clothing shopping event) on the island to raise funds locally, and to bring the spirit of this community and surrounding ones together.
For every $25 you donate a gift voucher will be given to a Bitaug resident who doesn't have the resources to shop at this event. Your generous offering will support the health of those living in the village, and give residents the opportunity to shop at the event!
We hope to repair the health centre and purchase medicines by December 2021, before the rainy season impacts the community's health and ability to build, and the Super Fun Ukay Ukay for Good will be held at the end of November.
Thank you for your compassion and generosity.
