Hi everyone,
We are Jolijn, Thijs, Rachel and Jildou; We are 4 students in our last year of medical school in either Utrecht or Groningen. We have had the opportunity to do an intern of several weeks at Nkhoma Mission Hospital in Malawi, Africa. During our internship we spent several weeks at the Medical ward, which is similar to the internal medicine department of the hospital in Europa/ America. This is the place where adults come to for treatment, when they get sick from a non-surgical disease.
Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world and famine is here a serious issue. However, it was still shocking to see how many patients were still struggling with paying for their medicine. Despite the relatively low price of the treatment, we noticed that a lot of patients still couldn’t afford the treatment.
The consequences of this was that patients would avoid going to the hospital in fear of the financial setback that would follow. This led to patients getting unnecessary more sick and even death, which could have been easily prevented with a few euro’s.
In hope of preventing this from happening again, we came with the idea to set up a fund-raising campaign from medical students to the people of Nkhoma, Malawi.
If every student that would visit this hospital would ask their family for a one time donation, we could help providing the treatment in the Medical ward for patients who can’t afford it.
This we cannot do without your help.
We would really appreciate any donation big or small, as even a small amount can mean a big difference here.
