Hazel is my 11-year-old service dog, and she’s been by my side for the past six years. Her early life was filled with chaos—her first home was challenging due to family finances and the needs of a child with autism. At one point, Hazel became very ill with Lyme Disease. Despite her struggles, Hazel and I formed a bond from the moment we met. She jumped right into my car the first time I visited her, and from then on, we were connected.
When her family had to move to a smaller residence, I agreed to foster Hazel until she could find a forever home. After my own dog passed away, I was asked to take Hazel in permanently. Though I was still grieving, Hazel’s gentle presence helped me heal. She’s always been thoughtful and attentive—after my knee replacement surgery, she would nudge my good knee before jumping onto the bed, always careful not to hurt me. Hazel is obedient, social, and loves her walks, whether it’s at the beach, in the woods, or downtown greeting everyone she meets.
Recently, Hazel was diagnosed with kidney failure due to her earlier Lyme infection. She’s still happy and active, but her treatment is ongoing and costly. Office visits, labs, ultrasounds, medications, a blood pressure monitor, and a special diet are all part of her care. The expenses have added up quickly, and there’s more to come as she continues her fight. Hazel deserves the best chance to enjoy this happy part of her life, and I want to do everything I can for her.
There are so many people who can ignore the chaos in this world, but not a sick or abused animal. I’m one of them, and I hope to help others understand that these animals are intelligent, thinking, and feeling beings. I could just use a little help now for Hazel. Thank you for any support you can give.
