Baloo is a 7-year-old German Shepherd. This past summer, he was diagnosed with hypercalcemia. There were many conditions the vet believed could have been causing this originally; however, we are fairly certain now that he has hyperthyroidism. Unlike in humans, for dogs, medication is not an option. The only treatment for this condition is surgery.
Baloo was doing okay until the past few weeks, where he became very lethargic and stopped eating. We took him to the vet, where they discovered his kidneys and liver were struggling, and his calcium levels were so high they were higher than the machine could register. He has since been hospitalized at our local vet for IV fluids and medication. He has been there 4 days so far and will be staying at least 2 more. The plan for now is to hopefully get his liver and kidneys better, then he will need imaging and surgery. Currently, there are no local vets that have the capability to perform the surgery, so we will be traveling an hour or so away for this.
Any money we raise will go to help us cover the cost of his treatment so he can go back to being our happy boy.
