Hi, my name is Janine, and I’m raising money to help cover my dad’s health care needs.
My dad has always been someone who was very generous and loved bringing people together. He had a big personality and a strong presence, and he cared about those around him. He often helped others in the way he knew how and tried to make people feel welcome and supported.
About 20 years ago, he had a serious head injury while playing tennis. Unfortunately, we didn’t realize at the time how much this injury would impact him later in life. Over the years, its effects slowly surfaced—affecting his decision-making and how he managed his finances—but it went undetected for too long.
In recent years, his life has changed dramatically due to multiple strokes and ongoing health challenges, including hydrocephalus. These have further affected his memory, mobility, and overall functioning. As a result, he is no longer able to manage his financial affairs, meet some of his basic daily needs, or live on his own.
Because of these health issues and the earlier financial impact, he lost his home and now lives in South Africa with my aunt and her husband, who have generously cared for him since 2019. They’ve been incredibly kind and committed, but they have their own challenges and responsibilities. He now lives on the bare minimum, with very limited funds to cover unexpected medical needs, rehabilitation, or other essential care.
Recently, he suffered a fall that required multiple staples to the back of his head. Initially, he seemed to recover, but a few weeks later, he developed persistent nausea and a loss of appetite. My aunt has been caring for him with incredible dedication, but extra nurse support has now been arranged to help manage his recovery and daily needs.
As an only child, this has been a very difficult journey for me—both emotionally and logistically. I do what I can from Canada, but I can’t be there in person, and it’s heartbreaking to watch his decline from afar while knowing how limited the resources are to support him.
Returning to Canada isn’t financially viable, and the monthly cost of health care insurance for someone in his position in South Africa is $500 CAD per month. The insurance covers hospital visits, doctors, specialists, medication, some dental care, cancer support (if needed), and special testing—none of which are fully covered otherwise.
We’ve set a fundraising goal of $10,000 to cover these essential costs for the next year, along with additional health care that isn’t included under insurance, and outings with a carer or nurse to help keep his quality of life as high as possible. Your support will help ensure he continues to receive the care and attention he needs to maintain his comfort and dignity.
