Thank you for reading this!
My dad, Joe, is a Vietnam Veteran. He raised six kids (myself included!) with my mother, Chris. They raised us all in our family home in New Hampshire with the money he made from his privately-owned company for HVAC and Plumbing - with only himself as an employee! They have welcomed everyone into their home over the years - huge family gatherings, friends of their kids, grandkids... They have come for the birth of each of my three kids to help, no questions asked.
A few years ago, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. In 2020, the years-long process was started to get him 100% VA disability for the service-related Parkinson's, due to Agent Orange. Recently, dementia has set in.
They finally had to let go of their home of almost 50 years and move to a single-story apartment. My mother is doing her best to care for his physical and cognitive needs, but she is one woman, let alone in her 70s herself.
Where are all these kids, you ask?! I'm still active duty, stationed in Germany. Another sister is stationed in California. One brother moved abroad almost 15 years ago. The three siblings at home, all with school-age kids, take turns responding to my parents' needs, appointments, and general help between caring for their kids.
The VA will cover some in-home services, and we have begun the process. We are seeking assistance to provide some skilled dementia care for my father, much-needed caregiver relief for my mother, and education for all of us. Anything you can do will help. Thank you.
