On the 27th of August we received unimaginable news. After a fall in the yard, Candy was taken to the hospital. Following several tests, and scans, they discovered a massive tumor. She was diagnosed with a Stage 4 Glioblastoma, the single most aggressive Brain Cancer. We were told that over the next 10 days it could double in size. We were told we had months, maybe even weeks to spend with Candy.
How do you cope with news like this, when your entire world is turned upside down? Candy rallied, and her positive attitude and strong will propelled her forward. She decided to have a surgery that, if it went well, could give her an additional 12-16 months of life. That surgery was on the 9th of September and it did go well! They were able to remove a large part of the tumor, promising an extension of minutes to spend with our Candy.
Over the past 5 months, you’ve asked how you can support Candy and the Chant family. They’ve not been able to say much more than they appreciate all the thoughts, prayers, and positive energy. COVID times make the best, and most needed, forms of care and compassion incredibly challenging. Well, we finally have a way you can help. It is NEVER easy to ask for money. In fact, Candy is one of the most stubborn folks around when it comes to this sort of support. We know, however, that taking this step is the best way for her to receive the care and support that she needs to get the best quality of life possible over the next year. Not having to hesitate or worry about money when it comes to making decisions for her care and comfort is exactly what the Chant family needs right now.
These are some of the ways in which the Chant family will be using these funds:
Medical care and expenses. Those bills just keep coming.
Candy needs trained professionals who can support her as she experiences the effects of the tumor, providing help to her during the day. Folks who can come and help her with everyday tasks, who can make sure she can travel safely from one part of the house to the next, help her shower, prepare meals and give medication, while also providing Pat, Candy’s husband, some respite.
The therapists and caregivers that administered Candy’s care when she was first discharged from the hospital would like to return to Candy’s home for in-home physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy, however, their services are not currently covered by insurance, and these services have to be paid for out of pocket. These funds would support those expenses.
Groceries and Meals! Cooking can feel like such a huge challenge when there are so many other things going on. These funds will give the Chant family the ability to order in or buy groceries and meals that are easy to prep and cook.
Emily, one of Candy’s daughters, lives in Seattle. These funds would help with travel expenses so Emily can fly home to see Candy more often without the financial barrier.
It is impossible for most of us to put ourselves into the shoes of the Chant family… But I know you can all imagine how grateful you would be in the same situation, to receive this kind of help at this point in time. We also understand that many of you are challenged financially due to COVID and other factors. Any little bit helps, and if you’re only able to help share and spread the word, we certainly appreciate that too! Your continued thoughts and prayers are also appreciated.
Thanking you wholeheartedly in advance, on behalf of the Chant family: Candy, Pat, Caroline and Emily
