Cardiac Arrest Preparation (CAP)

Hello! We are Cardiac Arrest Preparation (CAP), a student-led initiative at the University of Michigan working to increase education and awareness of cardiac arrest and CPR.

On August 29th, 2024, Ethan King, a freshman at the University of Michigan, suddenly collapsed while running with members of the Michigan Running Club (MRun). Ethan, who had no prior health conditions and had run track in high school, was a victim of a sudden cardiac arrest. Frantically, his teammates, including Nolan Tribu, attempted but failed to provide effective CPR due to their lack of training, leaving Ethan dead, without a pulse for minutes. Thankfully, they were able to flag down Hannah Stovall, a Michigan Senior, who began chest compressions until EMS arrived, saving his life. Although Ethan, thankfully, fully recovered, this event made clear just how much CPR awareness on campus and in the recreational sports program was lacking.

Following this, Hannah, Nolan, Ethan, and MRun member Ava Rawley formed CAP, aiming to educate our fellow students on cardiac arrest recognition and CPR. We attend meetings of campus organizations and teach how to recognize cardiac arrest and deliver hands-only CPR, as well as providing resources to get CPR certified for those who are interested. So far, we have trained hundreds of students, with many more to come! To support our mission, we are asking for donations to purchase supplies such as CPR manikins. These are used for hands-on practice, and teach the correct pace and depth for compressions.
