Car repair for homeless man (see updated goal)
UPDATE 9/3: I am amazed at the outpouring of support for this man. I went and spoke with him yesterday afternoon and he was too! We are considering whether, with this amount of money, and possibly a bit more from other sources, we could get him a better (used) vehicle because his is old and perhaps not the best long-term investment given the expense of repairs. This will take a bit more time. We will be researching vehicles on Craig's List and coming up with the best course of action over the next two weeks. I will update this as I have more information. Everyone's generosity and faith that this money will be used for good makes me feel a great responsibility to use this money wisely and well. If anyone has any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to me at [email redacted], or through GoFundMe.
UPDATE: I just spoke with a car repair shop this morning (Dana Meyer Auto Care). The man said he needs a new clutch and the repair shop said that could cost anywhere from $1,000- to $2,000, and there may be other things in need of repair. My family has donated $300 to this campaign. If others can continue to donate up to the $2,000 goal that would be very helpful. If it costs more, we will cover it or seek donations, but will ensure the car gets repaired. We will donate any unused money to the man, or to Five Keys Schools and Programs, after first reaching out to you to offer to return it.
We are seeking donations small or large - even $5 will help.
For more than a decade, a well-groomed, articulate, and well-mannered man has lived in a white pickup truck at a park near my home. He has never caused any problems. He does not litter, or leave his belongings outside his truck, or sleep outside his truck. The other night, my husband was driving home late and noticed the man pushing his car through an intersection. My husband stopped, and learned the man has to move his car weekly for street cleaning, but it no longer starts. My husband helped him push it. They struck up a conversation. It appears this many may have some mental health challenges, but is very amiable, and living his life quietly without disrupting others. We'd like to help him repair his car. We hope to raise $1,000 toward repairs and will fund any overage ourselves. If you'd like more information, please reach out to me using the GoFundMe contact button. I am not providing other information on this forum to respect this man's privacy, but can share more one-on-one by phone or email. If for any reason the car cannot be repaired or the money cannot be used to help this man, we will donate it to Five Keys Schools and Programs, which runs emergency shelters for people without homes in San Francisco and Oakland.
