On Saturday March 4th, after having just spent over $2,000 in car maintenance costs, my younger sister was hit head-on by a reckless driver. As a result, she sustained multiple injuries including fractured ribs/sternum/finger, bruises, as well as a concussion. As if this wasn’t enough, her most significant injury was to her driving foot which had been crushed in the accident. The bones in her foot including her toes were shattered into several pieces with ligaments torn and twisted.

She spent a week in the hospital, another week at an inpatient rehabilitation center, and was then sent home to fend for herself. Her biggest barrier has been not being able to put any weight on her right foot for more than 12 weeks post surgery. She has had to figure out how to navigate her 2nd floor apartment and perform other activities of daily living with adaptive equipment including a wheelchair, crutches, etc.

Fast forward to the present day and she is just now learning how to walk again with a walker. She still has a long road of recovery ahead of her and extremely limited resources. She is currently homebound without transportation, without employment, and is at risk of becoming homeless.
