It was Thursday morning June 27 when we heard that John (Tor's brother and my brother-in-law) was in a horrific car accident while on his way to work. We were shocked to learn that he suffered a fractured neck, back and had bleeding in his brain.
The information was coming in slowly from Jon's wife Tara who was sharing with us as soon as she had updates from the doctors. Around 9 am, we heard that he was being transported to the local level 1 trauma center where he would likely undergo surgery. He was in and out of consciousness during the transport.
As pictures and information started coming in, we we hoping for good news but half expecting for the worst...
We did not know if he had spinal cord injury or how bad he was bleeding in the brain, so all we could do was wait.
Thursday evening we got the first piece of good news the - John's spinal cord was ok. He does have spinal fractures in his neck and lower back and will have to wear a brace and do lots of physical therapy for the next weeks to months.
That night John had an MRI that showed that his brain bleed was stable - another piece of good news. Apparently his nose was smashed during the accident, so he was going to undergo a surgery that night to fix it. We had our fingers crossed.
The next day we received the photo of Jon's car, or what was left of it...
Apparently it flipped three times!! When we saw the photo we were both overcome with emotion, because it was obvious how close we came to losing John that morning. It is truly a MIRACLE that he is alive! It was a combination of shock and happiness..
John woke up after surgery on Friday morning with his nose all fixed up and we got this pic...
We were so happy to see John sitting up!!! His pain was much better at this time. He was getting regular pushes of IV pain meds and nausea medicine from his awesome ICU nurses.
We facetimed with John on Sunday morning. He was in good spirits. He told us about the 20 stitches in his upper lip and how happy he was to learn that he still had all of his teeth! We were so happy to see him try to smile with his very swollen face ❤️.
John is a mechanic and is the sole breadwinner for their family if six!
And the smashed up car was their only family car. The car insurance company will not cover another car and if will be some time before Jon can go back to work. As many American families, they did not have much savings and an event like this will hit them hard. So we set up this GoFundMe to help John, Tara, and the kids through this difficult time. Your donations will help them get another car, pay rent, and buy food.
