Hi, My name is Nathan Lunsford and my father Gary Lunsford was in a car accident on August 27, 2021. He went off a cliff trying to answer his cell phone and broke his back in the accident. He was rushed to the local hospital in Morganton, NC and then transferred to Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. He tested positive for Covid. They administered the normal Covid protocols to treat him and he was put on a ventilator on the 8th day. Let just say it has been an absolute nightmare since. I personally took 5 weeks off and was with him every day advocating for the best care possible. I fought and pleaded with 7 different Doctors over a 12 day period asking that they do a full blood panel on my dad. The seventh Doctor finally honored my request but by that time, he was in liver and kidney failure, had a large blood clot in his Aorta, blood clots all over his body, pneumonia and Aspergillus (Black Mold in Lungs). In addition, he was overdosed on Propofol and suffered a brain injury in the hippocampus (right side of Brain). Lasty, blood clots have entered his left foot and he has three toes that are completely black. His two other toes a dark purple, with a 3 inch wide and 2 inch high blister. It takes 7 days to get the results of his blood panel but they do trickle in a few each day. His oxygen was at 100% from the ventilator and has since been reduced to 45%, which keeps us hopeful. His vitamin C and D levels, which were once deficient are getting closer to the normal range. We have seen even more improvement in his condition the last 10 days. Over the last 10 days, his vital organs are improving. His lung health is improving. Doctor unwrapped his foot and said how is this getting better? Only the tip of his big toe is now black all other toes normal and the blister is gone. His right foot, that was purple, is now normal. CT scan showed only one small blood clot left. All other blood clots gone. We know we are not out of the woods yet and my dad still has a long recovery ahead of him. My stepmother has been by my dads side for the past 45 days that he has been in the ICU. She is running low on resources to pay for hotel expenses and incidentals. We are not sure exactly what the medical expenses will be but I’m sure they will be astronomical. My dad is being transferred on Friday to a Long Term Care facility. Unfortunately, it is also in Charlotte which is 2 hours away from their home. My stepmother, Diane is there with him for 12 hours each day to continue to advocate for the best care possible. Any help that can be given to assist him having an advocate and loved one by his side, in this extremely challenging situation would be greatly appreciated. Please share!!
