Capture Africa’s untold stories through one lens

"When we control our stories, we control our destiny. Help me give African women that power—from Sierra Leone to the world."

I am Hickmatu Leigh—a photographer, storyteller, and public health advocate. My art exists at the intersection of truth and resistance. Through my lens, I capture the raw, beautiful, and unapologetic realities of African women—stories often silenced, battles rarely seen, and victories seldom celebrated.
I grew up surrounded by powerful women whose stories were never told. Their struggles were hidden beneath resilience, their joys shadowed by sacrifice. As an African woman, I know the weight of silence. I know how it feels to be unseen, unheard, and underestimated. But I refuse to let that be our story.
Through my camera, I challenge oppressive systems, amplify marginalized voices, and bear witness to the courage of girls fighting to stay in school, the strength of women reclaiming their bodies, and the communities redefining traditions. My photography is not just about capturing moments; it is about giving voice to those who have been silenced for too long.

Our stories deserve to be seen, heard, and felt. I am committed to shedding light on:
• Sexual and Reproductive Health – The fight for bodily autonomy and the right to choose.
• Gender-Based Violence – Breaking the silence and amplifying the voices of survivors.
• Mental Health – Challenging stigma and advocating for change.
• Education – Celebrating girls who refuse to be left behind.
• Gender Equality – Redefining what it means to be a woman in Africa.

These are not just stories; they are urgent realities that demand attention. My photography challenges norms, breaks silences, and moves people to act. It is a testament to every African woman who dares to pick up a camera and rewrite the narrative.
In a world that often underestimates us, I am proof that our voices matter. I am building an archive of African women’s stories—a testament to our resilience, strength, and vision for the future. This archive will inspire generations, ensuring that our voices are never silenced again.

Through my art, I am showing that we are not just subjects but storytellers—visionaries who refuse to let others define our narratives. I want to inspire other young girls across Africa to see themselves as creators, as witnesses, as historians of their own truths.

My black-and-white documentary style strips away distractions, bringing viewers face-to-face with raw human emotion, vulnerability, and truth. This approach has allowed me to collaborate with global organizations such as UNICEF, UNAIDS, WHO, the World Bank, Aurora, Purposeful, MSF, and CODE.

My work has been exhibited internationally, including at:
• OFF of Dak’Art Biennale in Senegal – Celebrating African creativity and cultural resistance.
• Dubai – Showcasing the resilience and beauty of African women.
• South Africa and the US – Amplifying stories that refuse to be ignored.

This international recognition proves that African women can control their own narratives. But I want to do more—I want to reach more communities, tell more stories, and inspire more girls to believe that they too can become storytellers.

*Why I’m Asking for Help*
I am raising GBP 7500 / $10,000 to upgrade my photography equipment—ensuring that I can capture these critical narratives with the dignity and quality they deserve. This isn’t just about better gear. It’s about preserving our stories, protecting our voices, and paving the way for a generation of African girls who will grow up knowing that their stories matter.

With your support, I can travel deeper into African communities, mentor emerging female photographers, and create powerful exhibitions that challenge stereotypes and inspire change worldwide.

*What I Offer in Return*
Your support isn’t just a donation; it’s an investment in African storytelling. To show my gratitude, I am offering:
• $50 – Digital Thank You – Personalized thank-you note with a digital image from my collection.
• $100 – Behind-the-Scenes Access – Exclusive behind-the-scenes updates and early access to upcoming projects.
• $500 – Limited Edition Print – Signed limited edition black-and-white print from one of my impactful stories.
• $1,000 – Personalized Photo Book – A curated photo book featuring my most powerful narratives, signed and personalized.

These rewards are more than just gifts—they are pieces of African stories that you are helping bring to the world.

*How You Can Help*
You can support my journey by:
• Donating – Every contribution, no matter the size, helps me continue this work.
• Sharing My Campaign – Help me reach people who believe in the power of African storytelling.
• Connecting Me with Allies – Introduce me to those who can amplify our voices and strengthen our mission.

Help me tell our stories. Help me change the narrative.
This is more than photography.
This is visibility.
This is resistance.
This is our legacy—from Africa to the world.
