Please help Newport News Fire Department Captain William “Ken” Carter and his family! Ken has been diagnosed with bile duct cancer secondary to cirrhosis of the liver. On top of this diagnosis he has an autoimmune disorder. This only came to light after the new health screening that our city did for all employees. He was told that his gallbladder was inflamed and had some stones on ultrasound. He made an appointment and the gall bladder was removed. It was during this that the staff noted some elevations in the blood work. Within a week or so they did another lab draw and the numbers had gone off the charts. He was referred to Wake Forrest. While there they gave him the diagnosis and then referred him to UVA.
At UVA he will have further evaluations and treatments. He hopes to soon be scheduled for surgery on the area of cancer. When I last spoke to him he said the plan was to go in and remove the affected area of his liver.
November 1st will mark Capt. Carters 26th anniversary with the city of Newport News. He has been an active EMS provider since 1991. He has worked with many new EMS Providers over the years as an instructor. He helped to steer our department in EMS while in the training bureau. He recently came back to the floor as a station Captain at one of our busy fire houses! After returning from Wake Forest the city has made it available for Ken to return back to the training bureau which helps him and his family out in many ways!
Ken is married to his wife Judy and they have two wonderful children. One is off at college and one just graduated high school this past year. Judy will be by Ken’s side through all of this.
It is time for us to stand behind him and support him and his family during this life changing time!
All funds will be given to him and his family for travel, medical and whatever else they need them for!
