Capoeira Angola is an art form that originated on the African continent. As Africans were enslaved and transported by the Europeans to the Caribbean and South America, they were able to preserve the elements of their tradition and rites through art forms. So the customs and teaching were hidden as a dance accompanied with music so that it remained undetectable as they trained each other for liberation. This is our inheritance. These are the gifts that our ancestors have left for all of us to survive and thrive in this world.
Our communities need these healing arts now more than ever. As we learn about the atrocities of the past as well as what is continuing to happen in the present, we need a way to process and release the emotion that results through art, music and movement. The Capoeira and African Arts program will take place in historic Brower Park where educator and politician Shirley Chisholm taught classes during the month of July.
Your contribution goes towards materials for making instruments as well as compensation for musicians and capoeira instructors. Your support by spreading the word and financial donation is appreciated.
