Canelo's Rescue: From Pain to a New Life - treatment help
Donation protected
Hey there,
As you know, on the 17th March I came across a 'street dog' in Valladolid, a town around 1hr 45 minutes from my home in Tulum. Living in Tulum means I am no stranger to street dogs and many of you will know how much we cherish our Margy who we found in the trash over four years ago now. I would never ask for help (I have covered all his treatment thus far, of course) but Canelo - this poor dog - needs more care than I first thought, with special treatment. I cannot give up on him.
When you look into a dog's eyes and you see the pain, it's impossible to ignore and this particular dog was in the worst condition I have seen in my 8 years of living here. I could not ignore him. If we all ignored people and animals that were in need we would be in an even worse state than we are in, this wasn't an option for me.
After pleading and begging for help, a vet came out to collect this poor dog who we have now named Canelo - cinnamon in Spanish. As you can see sweet innocent Canelo has been starved, it has also transpired that someone has thrown hot oil on him. Can you imagine that pain and being left? I cannot. He is safe now but I need help in keeping him safe, getting him healthy and eventually - getting him the home he deserves.
I need extra help as Canelo also has TVT which is a very common form of STD here in Mexico which is treated via weeks of chemo. Many many dogs are treated for this here and go on to live a healthy and happy life. It is not cancer but a benign tumor that is treated only by chemo over weeks. This is very costly and estimated at around 20,000 pesos (around 1k USD) alone. Then I plan on flying him to New York where I have secured a place for him at a place that specialize in finding dogs like him a forever home. It's just the middle part of his journey I need help with.
I would never normally ask for help with this but I / Canelo need help as we have a long road ahead and I am not in a position right now to be able to give him a foster home. My only option has been to pay the vet to keep him - which I have done - but now his road to recovery is a little longer than I first envisioned, I'm calling on my friends, family and strangers alike to help him.
I'm a big believer that collectively people have the opportunity to have a real impact and I believe that people will be touched by his story and want to help me give him the future he needs. No animal should be left to die and there was a reason my path crossed with his. I know from experience that these 'street dogs' are the most loving, caring and grateful creatures - I see it in Margy's eyes every single day.
Don't underestimate that small acts of kindness have the ability to create a big impact.
Your donation - be it big or small - will go directly to saving Canelo's life.
Anything that is donated that is not needed for him will go to the dog shelter in Tulum, which is so overwhelmed they cannot help me. I am in a position where I can help Canelo as I have a community of kind and generous friends so I am calling on you to be part of Canelo's journey.
THANK YOU.
Gem & Canelo
Also if there is ANYONE in Tulum who can foster Canelo whilst he recovers, please please reach out. Treatment, food - whatever he needs will be covered by me.
