The Canco Park Conservancy Monarch Waystation is a volunteer effort to  help restore the monarch butterfly population and beautify the gardens in Canco Park.

The monarch butterfly population has declined by more than 90 percent since the 1990s, mostly due to loss of habitat and the use of pesticides. Urban gardeners can play a important role in fostering a habitat that will protect Monarchs and give them a place to rest on their 3,000 mile migration from Mexico to Canada. This migration requires multiple generations of Monarchs to complete the trip. Please visit https://www.monarchwatch.org/ to learn about our joint effort to save the Monarch Butterfly.

We are raising money to complete the garden. We need to purchase a tool shed to secure our tools and supplies. Other items needed are hoses, shovels, wheelbarrow, plants, mulch.

Once complete the garden with be a welcome passive green space feature and will serve as an educational tool for children, teaching them about the butterfly life cycle and the need for environmental conservation.

Our progress can be seen on Instagram @cancopark and facebook https://www.facebook.com/CancoPark/

We are fortunate to have a special park in Jersey City N.J. that brings a little bit of nature into our city. Canco Park sits in the shadow of the former American Can Factory in the Journal Square section of Jersey City. It is the only green space in all of the Journal Square neighborhood (approx 29,640 residents).
