Combining both my Spanish and American cultures in a film that deals with a global issue, this project intends to reinforce international collaboration by filming in Madrid, Spain, and having Spanish local cast and crew work with skilled filmmakers from UCA, Arkansas.

A dermatologist who chose to volunteer to work in the Covid unit during the Madrid lockdown, isolates herself from her family to keep them safe and leans onto her faith as she witnesses the threat of the pandemic during an exhausting day saving lives.
ES: Una dermatóloga que optó por trabajar como voluntaria en la unidad de Covid durante el confinamiento en Madrid, se aísla de su familia para mantenerlos a salvo y se apoya en su fe mientras presencia la amenaza de la pandemia durante un día agotador salvando vidas.
Paula is a filmmaker born and raised in Madrid, Spain. She moved to Conway, AR to pursue a career in film at UCA when she was 18 years old. Paula thrives on telling stories that make people reflect about their life and actions by approaching impactful and controversial societal issues with fictional stories, sometimes based on true events.

ES: Paula es una cineasta de Madrid, España. Se mudó a Conway, Arkansas, para comenzar su carrera en cine en la Universidad de Central Arkansas (UCA) cuando tenía 18 años. Paula se especializa en contar historias que hacen que la audiencia reflexione sobre su vida y sus acciones al abordar temas sociales importantes y controvertidos con historias ficticias, a veces basadas en hechos reales.

THE CHARACTERS/LOS PERSONAJES
A 54 year old hard working dermatologist, passionate about her work, who now works in the Covid Unit at her hospital. She is a wife and a mother of two, balancing work with family as much as she can. She is a faithful Catholic and constantly prays for the health and wellness of her loved ones.
ES: Dermatóloga de 54 años, apasionada por su trabajo, que ahora trabaja en la Unidad Covid de su hospital. Es esposa y madre de dos hijos, y equilibra el trabajo con la familia como puede. Es una católica fiel y reza constantemente por la salud y el bienestar de sus seres queridos.
A 25 year old Covid patient who just got out of the ICU after being there for a long time. He is a humorous guy who is studying for a masters and still living with his parents.
ES: Paciente de Covid de 25 años que acaba de salir de la UCI después de estar mucho tiempo allí. Es un chico gracioso que está estudiando un máster y todavía vive con sus padres.
A 30 year old nurse who works at the Covid Unit with Bárbara. She is in charge of making calls everyday to update the patients’ families, and she admires Bárbara’s passion and skills.
ES: Enfermera de 30 años que trabaja en la Unidad Covid con Bárbara. Está a cargo de hacer llamadas todos los días para actualizar a las familias de los pacientes, y admira la pasión y conocimiento de Bárbara.
Bárbara’s 60 year old husband. He is an engineer that is now working from home, locked in because of the pandemic. Antonio loves Bárbara and is worried about her physical and psychological health.
ES: Antonio es el marido de Bárbara y tiene 60 años. Es un ingeniero que ahora trabaja desde casa, encerrado por la pandemia. Antonio quiere mucho a Bárbara y está preocupado por su salud física y mental.
Bárbara’s 26 year old son, a fun hard working man who lives with his parents and now works from home.
ES: El hijo de Bárbara de 26 años, es un chico divertido y trabajador que vive con sus padres y ahora trabaja desde casa.
Bárbara‘s 23 year old daughter who is currently pursuing a master's degree in the US.

- Bárbara’s House will be filmed in the Director’s 5th-floor apartment in Madrid, Spain. The Bedroom window looks straight at Canchas, the park that gives the film its name.
- The streets of Mirasierra, a residential neighborhood in Madrid, very early in the morning when the streets are empty.
- The scenes where Barabara is working in the covid Unit will be shot in a hospital or clinic in Madrid.

- La casa de Bárbara se grabará en el apartamento de la directora en un quinto piso en Madrid, España. La ventana del dormitorio mira directamente a Canchas, el parque que da nombre a la película.

In October of 2023, nine crew members will fly from Little Rock, AR to Madrid, Spain. It will be a 10 day long trip, as we include time for adjusting, picking up equipment rentals, and scouting locations. The actual shoot will last 5 days.
ES: En octubre de 2023, nueve miembros del equipo volarán desde Little Rock, AR a Madrid, España. Será un viaje de 10 días, ya que incluimos tiempo para acomodarse, recoger el equipo de cine alquilado y explorar las localizaciones. El rodaje tendrá una duración de 5 días.
The American crew will collaborate with student filmmakers from Madrid, and it will be a bilingual set, as the film is also in Spanish. The cast will be hired in Spain. This experience will be enriching for both American and Spanish members.
ES: El equipo estadounidense colaborará con estudiantes de cine de Madrid, y será un rodaje bilingüe, ya que la película también es en español. El reparto también será contratado en España. Esta experiencia será enriquecedora tanto para los miembros americanos como para los españoles.

- Salaries: paying a daily rate to our Spanish crew and cast.
- Catering: feeding crew, cast and extras two meals a day. Also craft services for every shoot day.
- Equipment rentals: renting camera, audio, grip and electric equipment in Madrid.
- Production Design: purchasing costumes, props, and set decoration.
- Locations: paying for the hospital/clinic fee.
- Post-Production: hiring an editor, colorist, composer, and sound designer.
- Festival Submissions: paying for top tier festivals fees for submissions.

- Localizaciones: pagando la tarifa del hospital/clínica.
- Postproducción: contratación de un editor, colorista, compositor y diseñador de sonido.
- Envíos a festivales: pago de tarifas de festivales de primer nivel para enviar la película.
Even if we do not reach our goal, we will still make this film in Spain with whatever resources we have. We would fly the Director, Producer and Cinematographer and work with Spanish locals and volunteers.
Securing this budget assures us that we will make “Canchas” the best it can be, and that we will have the necessary tools to bring the Director’s vision and story to life.
ES: Aunque no consigamos nuestro objetivo monetario, haremos esta película en España con los recursos que tengamos. En ese caso, solo viajarán la directora, la productora y el director de fotografía, y trabajaríamos con locales y voluntarios españoles.
Conseguir este presupuesto nos asegura que haremos “Canchas” lo mejor posible, y que tendremos las herramientas necesarias para dar vida a la visión y la historia de la directora.
