In early July, 18 year old Mackenzie started to develop symptoms of what we suspected to be appendicitis. She was rushed to the ER with a fever of 103.7. Doctors did a CT scan to confirm appendicitis, but instead discovered a mass in her abdomen the size of a volleyball. They immediately took her into surgery to remove it. However, once in surgery, they discovered that the tumor had wrapped itself around a major artery and also attached itself to some organs. To remove it would be life threatening. The surgeon took five biopsies and sent them to pathology, which came back with a diagnosis of rare pediatric sarcoma.
After she recovers from surgery, Mackenzie will begin chemotherapy. The treatment for this type of cancer can be more than $100,000. In addition, Mackenzie and her mom will need to relocate to central Indiana for treatment. Please consider giving to support Mackenzie’s treatment and living expenses during this challenging time.
