UPDATE: We are sad to inform everyone of Howard's passing on May 8th. However we are grateful that he passed peacefully in the night, in his own bed at home, with Ronnie by his side and Ruby (his devoted doggie) at his feet.
We are still accepting donations, as the bills from Howard's medical treatments, hospice, and final arrangements have continued to pile up. We greatly appreciate your support to help our Mom get past the financial burdens that no one should have to worry about during a time of grief and loss.
Howard's obituary can be found here: https://www.averystortifuneralhome.com/obituary/howard-whaley?lud=67846328A1E718320ABC5BC76067CCCF&fbclid=IwAR30GfrLeFx1B2dkg6ZRzeMC4WXnbAMfntLbIN7U7l7DuxI2nlpu8P7Tl18.
We will miss Howard's infectious and guttural laughter, his wild and fun stories, his teasing and his "Dad jokes", and the immense amount of love that he brought to our Mom and our whole family. RIP dearest Howard - we love you.
------------------------------
This is Howard and Veronica (Ronnie) Whaley. Howard is an amazing man, father, friend and long time fisherman out of Narragansett, RI. Veronica is a strong, wonderful mother, wife, caregiver and the hardest worker! They found each other later in life and it was love at first sight. Having finally found true love is a beautiful thing. After nearly a decade together, Howard was diagnosed with stage 4, terminal cancer in October 2018. We were told he wasn’t going to make it to Thanksgiving and our lives turned upside down. The thought of losing our dad Howard tore at us all and our mom, Ronnie, was devastated. Life does not prepare anyone for this kind of news.
Howard and Ronnie decided to try chemo treatments to see if it would slow down the growing seven masses Howard had in his body. Over the last 6 months Howard has been in an out of the ICU in the hospital from the extreme toll the chemo has taken on his body, including life-threatening infections. Though he has been with us longer than we imagined, the cancer, chemo, and infections have taken toll on both Howard and Mom mentally, physically and financially.
Recently Howard has been staying at home on hospice care. Ronnie has taken a leave of work to be a full time caregiver for the love of her life. However, the medical bills, daily care supplies and just everyday life bills are piling up. Each chemo round was $1000, not including all the “extra” charges or even hooking Howard up to it. Insurance doesn’t cover most of the medications, with some being in the $2000 range.
No one should have to worry about choosing between paying for a roof over their head versus a prescription medication. We know we won’t have our dad forever, but the time our mother has left with her husband shouldn’t be spent on worrying about rent, prescriptions, doctor co-pays... etc. We hope to ease some of their worries so they can spend this time enjoying each other and treasuring the moments they have left.
That is why we are asking for any donation in any amount. Nothing is too small and anything is greatly appreciated. Please feel free to share this widely with others and thank you so much for your love and support through this very difficult time.
The Pokladnik and Whaley Family
