My name is Suzanne Ludwig and I want to tell you about my best friend.
Fonda Hurst is a member of many communities and has many friends in Indiana, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina among other places. She has made lifelong friendships everywhere she has lived and beyond. I’ve never met a person with more friends. Her friends are from all walks of life. Fonda has been a tireless advocate for the disabled, battered women, those struggling with substance issues and many, many others in need. She has been a friend to anyone who has needed it at any time. She is also a loving mother and grandmother. No one is more important to her than her family and friends and that is an ever-growing circle. She acts as a ‘stand-in mom’ for anyone who needs her and is a great listener and advice giver!
Over the last few months of 2022, Fonda has been dealing with some severe health issues. This resulted in a diagnosis of stage III lung cancer. In the process of getting to the bottom of her health issues, Fonda has undergone many tests and procedures that have been very costly. She has already spent over $1900 out of pocket including:
• 3 CT scans
• 1 PET scan
• 1 MRI
• 2 X-rays
Fonda has had many other appointments with her primary doctor, oncologists, pulmonologists, and other specialists with many more to come. She has also required lab work multiple times. Fonda recently had surgery in which they had to go through her lung to access tissue for a biopsy. She hasn’t received the bill for that procedure yet. All of this was at the end of 2022 and now she must start all over to meet her deductible for 2023.
Fonda has both chemotherapy and radiation on the horizon. Both have copays. In the next few weeks alone, Fonda will need to come up with a copay for $360.00 to install a port for her chemotherapy and she will have $140 copays for every treatment. She hasn’t found out how much the radiation will cost yet. Additionally, Fonda has been to the emergency room twice due to the amount of pain she is in. Fonda’s daughter, Alice, must take off work to take her to her appointments. Chemo and radiation will be many days in a row. She will have many more PET scans to determine if the treatment is working. This is going to be a very lengthy and costly process.
Fonda has a long road to recovery and any amount of help will be greatly appreciated. Fonda is a great friend to many of us and I know her friends and family will help in any way they can. The most important thing you can do for her is to pray for both her and her family!
Please keep Fonda in your thoughts and prayers and spread the word about her story.
