Hi,
My name is Chris Dugan and I am a pediatric cancer survivor, 18 months out of treatment. I am currently working on my Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout Rank (which is the highest rank a scout can achieve). To earn this rank you have to develop and lead a community service project. My service project will benefit The Children's Cancer Center of Tampa. The Children’s Cancer Center (CCC) is a local non-profit organization dedicated to serving families of children who have cancer or chronic blood disorders with emotional, financial, and educational support necessary to cope with their life-threatening illness.
Pediatric Cancer is very different from adult cancers. Most pediatric patients spend a majority of their treatment time in hospitals. In the 11 months that I went through treatment for my cancer, I spent over 120 nights in the hospital. We always had a hospital bag ready that had items that I needed to pass the time and make me feel better. The Childrens Cancer Center has a support bag called a 'Love Bundle' that they deliver to new cancer patients throughout our Tampa Bay area. These 'Love Bundles' contain games and toys and other items, but are mostly geared towards younger patients. My goal is to raise enough money to create a 'Love Bundle' just for teenagers, with items that teenagers need. I will also be including items that I found comforting, including a cancer survivor shirt that I designed.
This project means so much to me because I lived it. I was fortunate that I had a huge amount of support from my family and friends. A lot of kids may not have that and that is why these 'Love Bundles' mean so much to them. Any amount that you can give will help and will have a big impact on these kids lives. Thanks so much for your support.
This was me over halfway thru my treatment for Osteosarcoma (Bone Cancer). I was earning my Life Scout Rank (Life Scout is the last Rank before Eagle Scout).
