Last year, I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer (HER2+ and HER2-), and quickly discovered just how isolating, overwhelming, and emotional the journey can be, even when you’re surrounded by support.
So when I was asked to join the board of Cancer Support Netherlands, a brand-new non-profit dedicated to making sure no one has to face cancer alone, I couldn’t say no. This is a rare opportunity to build something that truly matters - a support system for others walking this difficult and deeply personal road.
Our mission is simple but powerful:
- To create community, connection, and care for anyone facing cancer in the Netherlands.
- To build safe, supportive spaces — both online and in-person — where people feel heard, held, and understood.
- To put human connection at the heart of every cancer journey.
We’re starting small but thinking big — and kicking off with our first fundraising goal of €5,000. These funds will go directly toward:
- Setting up the foundation and building our core structure
- Launching an online platform to connect and support cancer patients
- Creating a buddy program that matches people based on shared experiences
- Hosting workshops, events, and retreats focused on emotional, mental, and physical well-being
- Advocating for a more equitable and inclusive healthcare system in the Netherlands — where every patient, regardless of background, has access to the care and support they deserve
To help get things started, I’ll be hiking 150km through the Pyrenees next week — raising funds, awareness, and probably a few blisters in the name of compassion and care!
