Life saving cancer surgery for my mum

Donation protected

My mum (Heather Wilson) has worked for the NHS for the past 18 years. She’s worked for Marie Curie supporting patients to remain at home at end of life, worked as a District Nurse looking after patients with long-term conditions in their own home, worked for Macmillan as a Palliative Care Specialist Nurse and is now currently a Gynae Oncology Specialist Nurse who supports patients from cancer diagnosis through investigations, treatment and beyond.

Earlier this year my mum had pain in her lower abdomen which was being caused by her appendix, 5 weeks ago the doctors removed her appendix and caecum cuff and tests revealed she has "Goblet Cell Adenocarcinoma", this is a rare type of appendix cancer and it had spread to her caecum cuff – part of the Bowel.

After a telephone consultation with a specialist consultant earlier this week the cancer has been diagnosed as pT4; the cancer has the potential to spread to other organs in the abdomen This means she requires urgent surgery to remove nearby organs and assess the degree to which it may have spread, this is an aggressive Cancer.

She needs a right hemi colectomy (removal of part of the large bowel), oophorectomy (removal of both ovaries), omentectomy (removal of the thin fold of tissue that encases the stomach) and peritonectomy (removal of the lining of the abdominal cavity). Followed by Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (a highly concentrated heated chemotherapy treatment delivered directly to the abdomen during surgery) to give the best chance of survival.

Due to the nature of this cancer, time is of the essence to try to limit the spread. However, my mum has been told this week that the NHS is unable to provide this type of surgery for at least 5 months due to covid-19 and has been given the option of either waiting for surgery later on this year which would increase the risk of the cancer spreading and surgery not being as successful, or a private bed which is available at the moment however, would cost up to £50,000.

My mum has spent the last 18 years working for the NHS and working closely with cancer patients from diagnosis to end of life care. This has always been a passion of hers, she feels very strongly about providing good quality care to all her patients. Unfortunately, now when she needs the NHS the most, they cannot provide for her.

I want to raise enough money to help my mum get the potentially lifesaving surgery and care that she desperately requires.

Unfortunately, as we cannot rely on the NHS for this, we have no option but to seek private care. I hope that we can raise money above and beyond our target in order to help other people who are in the same situation as my mum.

I understand that times are hard for everyone, but if anyone could spare any money regardless of how much. You will be helping to save the lives of loved ones in these unprecedented times.

Thank You
