We're hoping you'll join us once again in celebrating Nicholas' birthday. On May 15th he would have been 23 and this is the 13th year we have done a fundraiser for children with cancer in his memory. We discussed possibly skipping or postponing the campaign this year because of all the hardship the Coronavirus has caused, but decided to go ahead with it for several reasons. So many programs have been canceled for these young warriors. Make a Wish is suspended, special summer camps for children with cancer and chronic illness have been suspended, volunteers aren't allowed in the hospital and children aren't even allowed to have their siblings visit - families are limited to only one parent in the hospital with them.
We feel the impact of a gift card will be just as important during this time, if not even more important. I contacted the hospital and asked if they thought grocery store and gas station gift cards might be needed as well with parents out of work. They were happy to hear from us and assured us that would be welcomed. We're not going to stop doing the gift cards to Target, GameStop, Build a Bear, Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, i tunes etc... but we are going add a few to grocery stores and gas stations.
The above photo shows Nick with Valentine the Clown. She was an amazing part of the Child Life team at CCMC and they really enjoyed each other. She isn't allowed to go into the hospital to visit patients right now, just like all the other activity volunteers.

Not having a sibling able to visit would have been crushing for Nick. During our treatment he was inpatient for 2 days to get his chemo and then usually for a few more about 10 days later when he was neutropenic and had a fever. Lucas was always there to play video games and keep him company. They instituted a policy when we were there during the summer one year where minors, even accompanied by an adult had to leave by 8. We hated being separated, it was so hard as a family. I feel terrible for these families now separated during such a scary and stressful time.
I hope you'll join us in supporting these children and families with a gift card to brighten their day - give them a smile and show them that they are not alone in their fight - there are people who care about them and love them! Cancer is Yucky, but You're Just Ducky!
