My daughter and son in law need your help!
In November 2019, Darren started having pains in his ribs and hips. At that time, the doctors treated him for muscle spasms. By the beginning of February 2020 he was seeing no improvement, so he asked so see a physiotherapist. The physiotherapist issued an xray, and the next morning he received a call to go to the RUH immediately. They ran an MRI and found multiple fractures in his ribs, they noticed his left femur was crumbling, and his spine was riddled with lesions. He was told that there was a 95% chance it was Cancer, and it was later confirmed by a bone marrow biopsy....He was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma.
Because of all this Darren's bones are extremely fragile. While he was in the hospital prior to surgery, he fell out of bed and broke his left femur. The doctors had to place a hip nail and metal rod in his left leg to repare the damage.
He and my daughter, Shanis, live in Turtleford, SK. They currently have to travel to North Battleford weekly for treatments. They are starting on month 4 of Chemotherapy. They have had to make many trips to Saskatoon to see his medical team and for testing. He now has multiple different prescriptions he must take each day.
Darren is about to undergo a Stem cell transplant in Saskatoon. The doctors need to harvest his stem cells in order to complete this procedure. Darren needs an Echocardiogram to check his heart function, he will need to get a Pulmonary lung function test, and a CT/PET scan which uses a radioactive dye that gets injected into his body in order to take pictures of his chest and lungs. Prior to all of this, there are several dentist procedures that need to take place as well.
In July the harvesting of stem cells will begin, and he will need accommodations for approximately 1 week. The actual transplant will take place in August. He needs to be in the hospital for 3 weeks to a month, depending on how he does, and needs to be in complete isolation. He will need to receive high doses of Chemotherapy to completely kill off his immune system, and then the transplant will take place. He cannot have any visitors, and will only be able to communicate through phone. Once he comes home, he will need to isolate for 3 months, and cannot go outside without being covered and out of the sun. All of their pets (6) need to be fully checked over and vaccinated. Something as simple as a cat scratch could make him very sick. All family in the home need full check up's, and possible vaccinations. He will be at extreme risk of infection and illness until till his immune system is built back up again. Darren has not been able to work since his diagnosis, and cannot return to work for a minimum of 6 months if everything goes well. There is also a risk of needing an additional transplant, hopefully that will not come to pass.
We appreciate anything you can do to help them out, are also asking for prayers.
