Hi, my name is Susan and I am the lucky recipient of a life saving kidney transplant. I have had quite the journey to get here. I have had kidney disease for most of (if not all of) my life. We discovered the kidney disease while I was pregnant with my first son when I was 20. We monitored it for several years and finally in 2023 my medical team and I decided it was time to start dialysis. At this point I also was listed on kidney transplant list. This required a surgery to place a catheter in my abdomen so that I could do peritoneal dialysis at home. This came with a whole set of issues due to the nature of the treatments. I had to have a couple of surgeries because of complications; one for drainage issues with the catheter, and one for emergency hernia surgery. All of these surgeries meant time off work, and I am my family’s main source of income. My short term disability at work is only 60% of my pay. This Gofund Me is a continuation of fundraising for the previous surgeries and time off. On March 23, 2025 I received the phone call that would change my life. I was going to get a new kidney thanks to a life saving donor. The transplant was a success and it is working great. Unfortunately I am back out of work again and will be until the end of June. I am a radiation therapist and absolutely love my job taking care of cancer patients. I am focusing on healing so that I can get back to work and take care of them. I am a wife and a mother of three wonderful children. My oldest is 25 and lives on his own. My two littles are 9 and 7. My children and husband are why this kidney transplant was so important and wonderful. This new kidney is going to help me be here for many more years. My work offers a voluntary critical illness which should have covered a major organ transplant. However they also cover a diagnosis of end stage renal disease which I underwent in 2023, however because of this they will NOT cover a claim of kidney transplant. This was devastating news as I was counting on this insurance money to help me financially cover my time off and has put me in a position where debt can start adding up quickly. I know times are rough for everyone right now. I am asking for help during this time, every donation is deeply appreciated as well as every share of my story.
