I'm here to raise funds for my best friend of 31 years. Her name is Betsy and she resides in Hong Kong. She is recently diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. Her symptoms began this past summer. However, she didn't get diagnosed until now because she has no health insurance and there is no such thing as low income health insurance in Hong Kong. On top of that, there has been a protest for democracy going on in Hong Kong for months, she has not been able to get the testing she needed to confirm the diagnosis.
Betsy's doctors recommend her to get chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation. They will then figure out further treatment afterwards. Treatment at the public hospital would be at a lower cost, but the wait is very long. She would have to wait for 2 months to be seen by a public hospital doctor and they would then evaluate her initial treatment. The longer she waits, the more the cancer would spread. Therefore, she would begin her cancer treatment at a private hospital where the wait is shorter. That means it will be more costly though. Due to the lack of insurance and that she will lose her job because of her illness, she won't be able to afford her treatment which would very likely save her life.
The estimated out-of-pocket costs are as follows: each doctor visit would be US $130, PET scan US $2337, biopsy/ultrasound/blood test US $2600, chemotherapy approximately US $20000, surgery US $25000, and radiation US $$20000. There will also be reconstructive surgery and the cost to cover her daily living expenses while she goes through treatment since there is no sick leave or disability leave in Hong Kong.
Without the urgent funds, she won't be able to receive any treatment at all. Despite of a challenging treatment process, her cancer is treatable. You will make a difference in saving her life.
