Canary Girls - A Short Student Film
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Alexandra and I am producing a short student film entitled 'Canary Girls' (in association with UWE Bristol).
SYNOPSIS:
Inspired by true events, our film tells the untold story of the Canary Girls—the women who risked their lives working in WWI munitions factories across the UK. Exposure to toxic chemicals stained their skin a sickly yellow, a mark of their sacrifice. Every day, they faced the dangers of explosions, illness, and exhaustion. Yet, amid the hardships, they found an unexpected joy: football.
Set in 1918, on the eve of the men’s return, our story follows the Munitionettes’ Cup—one final match before everything changes. The women have spent years proving their strength, forging bonds, and experiencing a freedom they never thought possible. But as much as they long for their fathers, brothers, and partners to come home, that homecoming comes at a cost. Football—their escape, their expression, their fight—will be taken from them.
This is the contradiction at the heart of our film: joy and grief intertwined. The war is over. The men are safe. But the world that allowed these women to step forward is about to push them back into the shadows.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP:
This is a student-led production, driven by passion but limited in budget. Your contributions will help bring this story to life through authentic costumes, makeup, and set design, as well as support our mission to share it with the world through film festivals.
Few memorials exist for the Canary Girls. Their story deserves to be told. With your help, we can honor their legacy and capture this moment of history—one of courage, sacrifice, and a freedom too soon forgotten.
Donate today. Be part of their story.
