HELP PRESERVE THE FUTURE OF GOLF AND ECOLOGY IN OUR COMMUNITY. PLEASE DONATE TO CANAL SHORES' ECOLOGICAL PLANNING FUND
The $10,000 Eco Challenge is Canal Shores' initial 2017 milestone in our efforts to raise $100,000 in 100 days. The funds raised in this Eco Challenge effort will be specifically targeted towards the completion of the Ecolological Master Plan.
For the second year in a row at Canal Shores, seniors from North Shore Country Day School have chosen to make land stewardship their facilitated service project. They brought their energy and spirit to help us continue on our mission. Here is their story.
----------------
As North Shore Country Day School seniors (Winnetka, Illinois) we've learned a lot about the challenges of climate change and environmental issues in the classroom, and now, for our senior year community service project, we've decided to make a difference in our own neighborhood.
WE'RE RAISING $10,000 TO RESTORE AND REVIVE THE LAND
We discovered that a local non-profit golf course, Canal Shores, received a $20,000 matching grant from Illinois Department of Natural Resources Coastal Management Program. This planning grant was to enable Canal Shores to “hire a design engineering firm to develop a comprehensive habitat restoration and land use plan.” In April 2016, Canal Shores selected PRI, Planning Resources, Inc., for the job. Click here to read the executive summary.
When we toured the course we saw for ourselves the need to review what's there and plan for the future. Invasive species like buckthorn and riverbank grape had for decades been strangling and suffocating native species like oak and elm. We learned that making ecological improvements will enhance the wildlife habitat for migrating birds and pollinators.
WHAT WE'RE DOING ABOUT THIS
Clearing and cleaning the entire forty acres is not very realistic, so, with the guidance of Jason Way (volunteer associate board member and Grounds Committee member) and Steve Neumann (Canal Shores' volunteer board member and Grounds Committee chairman), we've targeted the south end of the course. That's the 15th green and 16th hole. In addition, we've been door-knocking around the course to raise awareness and ask for donations. Plus, we've put together this gofundme effort along with a video as a portal for any and all people interested in making a difference for the good of the course and its environment.
YOU CAN HELP WITH A DONATION
This grant tasked the non-profit Evanston Wilmette Golf Course Association with raising $20,000 for the match. PRI is nearing the final phases of the project but can't move forward without financial support for the time, personnel and resources; let's bring their work to full realization. Please support this effort, it makes a difference and so can you.
THANK YOU!
