Canada supports Jamaica — Helping Rebuild After Melissa

I’m sure many of you have been following the horrific scenes coming out of Jamaica. Hurricane Melissa has devastated large parts of the island, destroying homes and communities, and leaving so many without food, power, or safe shelter.

Over seven years ago, while working with Randstad Canada, I was granted a one-year leave to partner with the Canadian government on an initiative supporting the Jamaican government in creating employment opportunities for unattached youth. Just one month after moving to Kingston, I met my husband, Blaise. We’ve now been together for over seven years and married for two — and throughout that time, Jamaica has remained a central part of our lives.

Many have reached out over the past few days to ask how our loved ones are doing. Sadly, several of our family and friends have been directly impacted by Hurricane Melissa, including those close to Blaise and his family. While a few were spared, many others in our wider community are now facing devastating loss.

Alongside the heartbreak, there’s also been an increase in fraudulent fundraising attempts, which makes it difficult for people overseas to know how to help safely.

So, Blaise and I have decided to start this GoFundMe campaign to ensure that donations from our community here in Canada — and beyond — go directly into the hands of families who truly need it.

We are currently working with trusted contacts on the ground to identify specific families whose homes were destroyed or whose livelihoods were wiped out.

Every dollar raised here will go toward:
✅ Food, water, and medical supplies
✅ Roof and home repairs for vulnerable families and small businesses
✅ Support for children and youth — school supplies, clothing, and safe spaces to recover

All funds will be withdrawn in Canada, and I will personally deliver or transfer them through our trusted community network in Jamaica, to ensure that they reach the right people safely and transparently.

Even $5 goes a long way. I know times are uncertain for many here in Canada, but if you’re in a position to help — even in a small way — it will make an enormous difference.

We’ll post regular updates so you can see exactly where your contributions are going and the impact they’re making.

Thank you, from our hearts, for your kindness, generosity, and for standing with us — and with Jamaica — during this devastating time.

With gratitude,
