Like a true artist, Joel died too young.
As many of you know, my extraordinary little brother passed away unexpectedly on February 7, 2024. He was only 39 years old.
Joel was a survivor and a survivalist (seriously, I used to tell him that if we ever had a zombie apocalypse I was coming to get him because I knew he would figure out how to keep us alive).
He fought so many demons and overcame so many personal battles, only to fall sick and pass away within the span of maybe 48 hours.
Toxicology proved he was clean of drugs and alcohol at the time of his death. He is currently undergoing an autopsy and we are hopeful for answers about what caused the kidney failure that led to his untimely passing.
In the meantime, my mom and I are trying to figure out how to fund his services as he had no life insurance and my family unfortunately is not financially able to give him the send off he deserves. Not that he would have wanted it - in fact he would be super mad at me for this and tell me to just go bury him in the woods lol.
But my family needs this to start any semblance of a healing process. As many of you also know, our father died in front of him on Thanksgiving day in 2021. Peace has been elusive for us for a few years now and we need it now more than ever.
The basic services we hope to provide are approximately $3,500. Considering a gallon of milk costs about $100 nowadays (not really, but you know what I mean), I know that many of you reading this may not be in a place to donate even though your hearts are hurting as much as ours. In that case would you please be willing to share this with others? Honestly even if they can't help either, at the very least more people will know who he was and how much he meant to the world.
Joel was extremely talented, but he was also extremely kind. Extremely intelligent. Extremely compassionate. Everyone who knew him also knows he was also ridiculously good looking AND charismatic AND funny AND good at sports (archery, baseball, football, etc,) AND he could cook literally anything and make it extra. I always told him he was everything I would never be, but he was just too pure and humble to ever believe that about himself.
When we were little, my mom used to tell us that some of the angels in heaven were artists and it was their job to paint the skies every day. Well heaven got a new artist, and I will look at the sky each day for the rest of my life and say "thank you Joel, it's beautiful." I hope you do too.
With love, Joel's DNA (that was our nickname for each other)
